Simon Sinek on how mentorship really works
“You can’t just walk up to a random person and say ‘will you be my mentor?’, just like you can’t ask somebody ‘will you be my friend?’… that’s not how it works”
We tend to put mentors on a pedestal. We confuse the relationship as a hierarchical one, where good advice flows only in one direction. But there is a lot more to it than that.
In the video below, Simon Sinek shares a nice anecdote about a time he sought out a mentor, expecting the relationship to be one way. What he learned, to his surprise, is that the connection is less mentor:mentee, and more mentor:mentor, forged out of a sense of mutual trust and friendship.
